Successful behavior analysts possess the right combination of clinical and intangible “soft skills” - a commitment to ethics, the ability to collaborate, to think critically and make appropriate “in the moment” decisions, ability to be effective in different cultural and socio-economic settings, understanding of how to use technology to create leverage and capacity, and most importantly, ability to effectively communicate with all key stakeholders, across different environments.
During this webinar, we introduced the concept of a Minimum Viable Clinician (MVP), defined as a clinician who possesses the minimum set of skills to be effective across all settings. Using the MVP framework, we utilized a combination of lecture and digital symposium formats that brought knowledge, experience, and skills of industry-leading BCBAs that created a world-class learning experience for our students. Throughout this series, BCBA supervisors learned to create a new generation of MVCs, and also those capable of surpassing the Minimum Viable Standards to become exceptional clinicians.
The goal of this series is to develop a standard of excellence in supervision to reverse the troubling trend of diminishing supervision quality. By employing the MVC standard, the field of behavior analysis will not only develop a new generation of behavior analysts capable of increasing the effectiveness of ABA intervention but also capable of enhancing the credibility and reputation of the field of behavior analysis.
MODULE 1: Developing Essential Foundational Repertoires in Supervisees
Critical thinking and problem-solving are "must-have” skills for all successful behavior analysts - some of whom are required to make hundreds of decisions in a single day. Yet, these skills are rarely taught in any coursework or included in the exam to become a BCBA.
This webinar is presented in a Digital Symposium format - a facilitated roundtable discussion format with world-class guest subject matter experts. Participants were introduced to the concept of a Minimum Viable Clinician (MVC), a clinician who possesses a minimum set of competencies to be an effective clinician. Our presenter and panelists reviewed the critical skills required to achieve the MVCs status - (1) clinical competency; (2) critical thinking; (3) cultural competency; (4) commitment to ethics; (5) collaboration and (6) knowledge of how to maximize technology to create leverage and capacity.
The group engaged in a discussion regarding the importance of mastering these foundational Minimal Viable skills. They used personal stories and examples to underscore the importance and impact of clinicians achieving an MVC level of effectiveness. They discussed the current state of the field of behavior analysis and the impact of poor supervision on the lives of clients and the field of behavior analysis.
During our 11/13/2018 LIVE webinar, our presenter, Dr. Noor Syed, Ph.D., BCBA-D, and subject matter experts, Dr. Jon Bailey, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Dr. Bobby Newman, Ph.D., BCBA-D, and Jacob Sadovoy, BCBA, discussed the pivotal role supervisors play in maintaining or enhancing the quality of the field of behavior analysis. How BCBA supervisors used their power and responsibility to either positively or negatively influenced the behavior of current and new crops of BCBAs will result in fundamentally changing the field of behavior analysis, either positively or negatively.
