"I truly enjoyed the course and learned so many things that I was immediately able to put into practice! As an SLP in a pediatric private practice, I work with many children on the autism spectrum. Though I am not in a classroom (anymore- I used to be school-based) I found the course to be rich with strategies and tools I can use daily. I also appreciated the presentation of the research behind the methods/techniques. Knowing that there is solid research behind what I am doing is very important to me. Thanks again for a great course. I am certainly more confident in the things I do with my clients!" - Andrea Van Boven, Lead Speech-Language Pathologist

View this productJourney to Independence Level 1 contains English-language play plans in six areas: reading readiness, mathematics readiness, cognitive activities, adaptive routines, language development, and social and emotional activities. The activities include letter and number matching, pretend shopping, animal puppet play, choices, greetings, and toy turn taking.
Available from: Special Learning.
Original printed copyright: 2022 SL Global.
Material context: Some activities require materials you prepare separately: Family Calendar calls for a weeklong calendar and labeled activity pictures, while Shape Box calls for matching holes cut into a shoebox lid.
Reading activities include an alphabet soup matching game, a labeled family calendar, grocery lists made from flyers, finger tracing, and acting out story scenes. Mathematics activities use numbered beanbags, action dice, pretend eggs, number puzzles, and an egg-carton game for numbers 1, 2, and 3.
Cognitive activities include shape hunts, matching felt pictures, matching toys during cleanup, and shape sorting. Adaptive and language activities cover pretend food shopping, clothing and body-part identification, shoebox rooms, animal puppet play, and washing toy vehicles.
Social and emotional activities cover making choices, requesting items, greetings, dancing with emotion cards, and taking turns with toys. The plans list objectives, related skills, required materials, preparation, instructions, generalization ideas, and easier or harder variations. Each activity set also includes an instructional-loop reference.

Before you begin: a note on safety
Downloadable. Your files arrive as a single zip in your account as soon as your order completes, and they are yours to keep.
These activities are designed to be done together with an adult present the whole time. Please stay with your child for every activity in this curriculum.
Balloons — including uninflated balloons and pieces of a burst balloon — are a serious choking hazard for young children. Keep all balloons, small parts and other small items out of your child's reach before, during and after any activity, and put them away as soon as you have finished.
Scissors and any other sharp materials are for the adult to handle. Do the cutting yourself and give your child the finished pieces.
You know your child best. If any activity does not feel safe for your child right now, skip it or change it — the goal is the skill, not the materials.
