Overview
When a learner needs help with a response, what kind of prompt fits the task, and how can that help be reduced? In this recorded training, Michele LaMarche explains errorless teaching, compares seven prompt types and discusses fading support toward independent responding.
What the recording covers
- Errorless teaching: prompts as additional support during a teaching trial, with a correct response followed by reinforcement. The presenter discusses new skills and situations where errors begin to increase.
- Seven prompt types: vocal, visual, physical, model, gestural, looking and positional prompts. Examples include spelling, picture cards, getting dressed, toothbrushing and organizing a room.
- Choosing support: probing the help needed, adjusting when a prompt does not work, and defining prompt levels consistently across a teaching team.
- Fading prompts: reducing help while watching the learner's response. The recording discusses least-to-most and most-to-least sequences, brief pauses and returning support when needed.
- Unnoticed cues and prompt dependency: how an instructor's gesture, gaze or placement of an item can influence a response that appears independent.
- Error correction: re-presenting a task with support, allowing another try, and reassessing instruction when errors repeat. Differential reinforcement closes the discussion.
The recording includes physical guidance and reinforcement-based instructional examples. It describes the presenter's recorded approach; it does not provide an individual teaching plan or promise that a learner will achieve independence.
