Providers of Healthcare or education serving the needs of individuals with Autism or other special needs encounter medication related issues on a daily basis. Virtually every professional (and parents) understand that medication plays a significant factor in a person’s ability to function and make progress, but very few possess sufficient levels of knowledge to make informed decisions when providing services to children, adolescents, and adults receiving medication. This lack of knowledge is even more pronounced when dealing with co-morbid conditions.

From our all-star team of subject matter experts - Dr. Ronald T. Brown, PhD, Dr. Deborah Padgett Coehlo, PhD, C-PNP, PMHS, CFLE
and Dr. Lyre C. Fribourg, PhD, BCBA-D, you will learn the following:

  1. Compare the different categories of medications used to treat common mental health disorders in childhood.
  2. Explain the difference between treating internalizing behaviors versus externalizing behaviors.
  3. Describe the steps taken by healthcare providers when deciding on which medications to use with a specific child.
  4. Explain important factors to monitor when a child is on medication(s).
  5. Discuss the importance of holistic care, including healthy lifestyle changes, healthy sleep patterns, behavior management counseling, parenting counseling, educational consultation, and use of supplements in addition to medications when treating childhood disorders.
  6. List common myths associated with the use of medications in the treatment of childhood disorders.
  7. Explain the use of off label medications in children and the FDA medication approval process.
  8. Apply knowledge to case studies of children with childhood disorders treated with medications.

Because of the specificity and complexity of psychopharmacology, most clinicians, with the exception of psychologists and developmental pediatricians do not possess a deep understanding of this topic? Why does this even matter? Similar to an autism diagnosis, most clients present their symptoms differently. After an accurate diagnosis has been made, in most cases, the most common “script” involves a combination of medication and behavioral intervention.

With the plethora of meds that are constantly changing, how do psychologists possess a sufficient level of knowledge to understand the impact of meds on their clients? Do they incorporate behavioral strategies as a modality to achieve the best outcomes? Some clinicians might be able to answer “yes” but most likely a small number.

Each 2-hour session will be broken down into three primary areas: (1) study on classes of medication; (2) how it relates to various symptoms; and (3) use of case studies to provide a deeper level of understanding by seeing how both come together in practice.

In this Overview of Psychopharmacology and Childhood Disorders webinar, participants will be able to:

 • List common classification of childhood disorders
 • Correlate classes of medication typically used to treat various childhood disorders
 • List 3 to 5 commonly used behavioral interventions to supplement medication management
 • Implement 3 to 5 simple behavioral strategies that can be easily implemented with most client “scripts.”
 • Create simple intervention plans that combine medication management and behavioral strategies to generate the best outcomes.
